Taking Things For Granted

StormI’m staying with some friends for a week or so. They live in the sticks, really in the middle of nowhere. It’s making me realise how much I take for granted – like electricity for example.

We’ve just had a major thunder storm, and the electricity went off. For hours. I get power cuts at home, but they are pretty rare. My hosts tell me that it happens here all the time several times a week!

The other thing that is striking is the effort it takes to go and buy anything, be it a loaf of break, some milk, or a beer. Being so far from civilisation means any such trip requires some major pre-planning.

On the plus side, I don’t remember feeling quite so calm and relaxed in a long time.
